Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is Ransomware?
A. New types of virus that take over your computer, and will not allow you to do anything until you have completed a couple of 'fake' tasks and paid some money. The computer is still infected with the rogue program and you are out of pocket.

Q: Do I need anti virus protection? A: ABSOLUTELY - YES

Q: Do I have to pay for Anti Virus software? A: No - there are many 'Free' solutions available
(AVAST is just one of them). There is also a wide variety available on a 'subscription' basis.

Q: Who is the best for Broadband? A: A very popular question, and the answer is "the supplier you have had the least problems with. How much you pay generally does not make a difference, most home users should be roughly £20-£25 per month including calls, line rental and Broadband. Although as you ask I would only recommend one company -

Q: Do I need 'Anti Spyware' protection? A: ABSOLUTELY - YES

Q: Do I have to pay for Anti Spyware software? A: No - there are many 'Free' solutions available
(Malwarebytes is just one of them). There is also a wide variety available on a 'subscription' basis.

Q: Do I have to pay for Word Processing /Office software? A: No - there is a perfectly good free version from
Open Office

Q: Can I put my computer in the conservatory? A: At the end of the day, you can put your computer where you wish, however computers do not like heat. That is why they have fans to keep important parts cool.

Q: Do I need to replace my computer every 2 or 3 years? A: This is the most common question... The answer is not straight forward, as it greatly depends on what you use your computer for. If you want to play the 'latest' games then you may have to 'upgrade' your computer more regularly. However if you just want to 'surf' the web, write emails, write letters etc, then a computer that is years old will do the job. However the basics are that the computer must be 'protected' and relevant updates downloaded and applied/installed.

Q: How can I 'back-up' my data/documents? A: There are many ways to back-up your data, one of the easiest is to copy the information to a 'Flash USB drive'. Other routines are available such as
SugarSync, as well as external drive and of course CD/DVD.

Q: Whilst browsing the internet, 'something popped up' and said that my computer was infested with x number of viruses/spyware and suggested I click here to fix - should I? A: One of the most common questions I get asked...the answer is simply NO. It is most likely that your computer is already infected, however as soon as you click to 'fix' the problem - your computer will get worse and eventually prompt for money - do not pay. This can be an example of 'Ransomware'.
